The Darling Downs Wireless is no more. At its peak it was a wireless network in Toowoomba using cheap 802.11b devices and spare machines providing 17 people with free high speed network access. There was officially no Internet provided, but some members did allow limited access to specific friends using VPN-type access. The main device used was the MNWAPB access point running in bridge mode connected to a modified “Austar” WDS dish. There were 6 routers running Linux or FreeBSD complete with OSPF routing protocol. The network was mostly used to play games (such as Battlefield 1942 or Quake 3) and it provided a relatively reliable sub-10ms ping.
The ddw.net.au domain name was meant to continue to host something special but now I’ve got it redirecting here. Alex from Maxo Telecommunications paid for the renewal of the domain. I no longer live in Toowoomba so cannot continue maintaining the network there.
